AirAsia launches Flights between Jakarta and Kuching

AirAsia recently launched flights between Jakarta and Kuching. The three times weekly service which strategically places East Malaysia at the forefront of the airline’s vision to stimulate and encourage more travel, enhances connectivity and taps to the international market from the Jakarta hub.

The Kuching hub serves seven domestic routes to Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Bintulu, Sibu and three international flights to Macau, Bali and now Jakarta with a total of 163 flights per week. Come 15th May 2008, AirAsia will start introducing daily flights to Macau and Penang. Currently, AirAsia connects Kuala Lumpur to more cities in Indonesia than any other airline offering travellers a staggering 367 flights a week.

Dato’ Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia Berhad said “AirAsia has helped to bring Kuching closer to other parts of the region by opening more entry points for foreign visitors to get into Sarawak. Thus the inclusion of its international network to Jakarta from our Kuching hub will not only allow greater connectivity between the two countries and bring greater traffic but also prepares the East Malaysia hub for global low cost travel.”

“Since 2001, we have carried over 8.5 million guests from and into Sarawak from the various AirAsia points in the region. We are thrilled that our low fares have played such a vital role in increasing the air traffic, promoting tourism, boosting trade and stimulating the growth of the traveling market. Moving forward, we strongly hope that our robust growth will be supported with an appropriate air terminal to cater to this emergent demand” Dato’ Tony added.

To celebrate the opening of this new route, AirAsia’s one way fares start from IDR 29,999 or RM9.99 until 13 April 2008 for travel before 10 June 2008.

Malaysian Airlines

Malaysia Airlines (Malay:Syarikat Penerbangan Malaysia; MYX: 3786) is the flag carrier of Malaysia. Malaysia Airlines operates flights from its home base, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and its secondary hub in Kota Kinabalu. Despite having undergone a financial restructuring exercise in 2006, Malaysia Airlines maintains a strong presence in Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Middle East and on the lucrative Kangaroo Route between Europe and Australasia. Malaysia Airlines also operates transatlantic flights from Kuala Lumpur to Newark, via Stockholm, and transpacific flights from Kuala Lumpur to Los Angeles, via Taipei. In 1997, the airline was the record holder of the world's longest non-commercial, non-stop flight from Boeing Field in Seattle to Kuala Lumpur, flying eastward passing the European and African continents and breaking the Great Circle Distance Without Landing record for an airliner on a Boeing 777-200ER: longer than the record held by the Boeing 777-200LR.
